Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

184 g (Decathlon, stove only; the carry box is another 104 g) sits in the 180-299 g band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Decathlon gives the carry box as 10.2 x 10.2 x 9 cm: 10.2 x 10.2 x 9 = 936 cm3, about 0.94 L, in the 0.6-1.59 L band. The stove on its own is listed as 12 cm across and 8.5 cm high, about the same volume.

Boil speed (still air)

From maker's figures 6/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 6: A bit better than average.

Decathlon says 3 min 50 s on its feature list and 3 min 48 s in its heating-time test text; the feature list looks like the same result rounded. The slower figure, 230 s for 1 litre, is used (the method takes the slowest), in the 230-299 s band; 228 s would be band 4. Decathlon tested with a Trek 500 stainless steel pan and does not state the wind.

Wind performance

Estimate from maker's specs: windshield in the box 3/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

In short

Good for

  • Car-based or short trips where weight and pack size matter less
  • Walkers who want four wide pot supports for a normal-sized pan

Strengths

  • Decathlon quotes 3 min 50 s for 1 litre with 2,200 W output
  • Four-legged pan support suits all pots, according to Decathlon

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for a backpacking stove at 184 g, plus a 104 g carry box
  • Bulky: the box is 10.2 x 10.2 x 9 cm, about 0.94 L
  • Decathlon recommends a windshield, and no independent review has tested it in wind
  • No regulator, so not for winter use (not rated for -10 °C)
  • Decathlon says it does not fit Coleman cartridges
  • Decathlon lists 158 g of gas an hour, so a 230 g cartridge lasts about 1 h 27 min
