Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 560 g but its US page gives 615 g; we band the heavier, 615 g, in the 450-649 g band (560 g is the same band). English Woodsman read 615 g off his box. Mark Young weighed 589 g for the first X2 Pro and 633 g for the Generation 2 pot: both in the same band.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 10/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 4.5 g of fuel for 0.5 L, doubled to 9.0 g per litre (scaled), under the 11 g line. It is a lab figure with a Fire-Maple Feast 2 pot and 20 °C water.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 8/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives 1 min 42 s for 0.5 L (204 s for 1 litre, scaled) and also 'boiling 1 L water in 3.5 minutes' (210 s). We band the slower 210 s, in the 210-269 s band.
In short
Good for
- Walkers who want the X2 with a metal handle and a pot support in the box, and a fuel figure from Fire-Maple
- Pairs sharing a hot drink and a freeze-dried meal on three-season trips
- Anyone who wants to put a frying pan or kettle on the same burner
Strengths
- Fire-Maple states its fuel use: 4.5 g for 0.5 L, about 9 g per litre when doubled
- 560 g by Fire-Maple's UK page, about 70 g less than the X2 (Adventures with Spackmann)
- Pot support in the box lets the burner take other pots and pans
- Spare O-rings with a cover on the canister connector, and a metal handle in place of plastic (Fire-Maple)
- Adventures with Spackmann boiled 0.5 L in just under 2 minutes in cool outdoor air
Weaknesses
- Fire-Maple's two pages disagree on weight (560 g UK, 615 g US) and Mark Young weighed 589 g and 633 g for two builds
- Mark Young found the first X2 Pro's handle loose with a spill risk when pouring
- Red Branch Bushcraft's canister would not nest in the pot, and his 0.5 L boil took 2 min 13 s outdoors, not the claimed 1 min 42 s
- Heavy for one person
- Unregulated, so power drops as the canister cools; Fire-Maple's US FAQ for the X2 says this burner suits three-season use, so we mark it not winter-ready
