Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.
Fire-Maple gives 511 g for the whole system on both its UK and US pages, in the 450-649 g band, so we band 511 g. Sort Of Interesting weighed a little over 700 g fully loaded with a 100 g canister, so about 600 g without it. OutdoorGearLab weighed 445 g for stove, pot and lid (about 500 g with the cup), which would be a band higher; we band Fire-Maple's figure.
Fuel use
Estimate from maker's specs: fuel type (no fuel use figure published) 5/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 8/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fire-Maple's UK page gives two figures: 1 min 42 s for 0.5 L (doubled to 204 s for 1 litre, scaled) and 'Boil 1L in just 3.5 minutes' (210 s). We band the slower 210 s, in the 210-269 s band. OutdoorGearLab timed 0.5 L at 2 min 41 s in its lab, and we still band Fire-Maple's figure.
In short
Good for
- Solo walkers and weekend wild campers who want a cheap boil-in-the-pot system for hot drinks and freeze-dried meals
- Three-season trips where one pot of up to 1 litre is enough
- Anyone moving off a separate stove and pot who wants everything to pack into one 12.8 x 17.3 cm pot
Strengths
- 511 g for stove, 1 litre pot, lid, bowl and sleeve; a 100 g canister nests inside
- Push-button igniter, folding handles and a neoprene sleeve
- Fire-Maple's lab time is 1 min 42 s for 0.5 L; Sort Of Interesting measured 1 min 40 s for 0.5 L in still air
Weaknesses
- No canister stand in the box (The Bald Scrambler), so it is less steady than the X2 or X3 and a stand is an extra purchase
- Only a 100 g canister nests with the burner and bowl; a 230 g canister fits in the pot on its own but the burner and bowl then travel separately (Fire-Maple US FAQ, The Bald Scrambler, Sort Of Interesting)
- Slower in a draught: Sort Of Interesting took 2 min 40 s for 0.5 L and 5 min 20 s for 1 L in a breezy spot
- OutdoorGearLab timed 0.5 L at 2 min 41 s in its lab, against Fire-Maple's 1 min 42 s, and calls it one of the heavier integrated stoves it tested
- Unregulated, so power drops as the canister cools; Fire-Maple's own US FAQ for the near-identical X2 says this burner is for three-season use, so we mark it not winter-ready
- No pot support for a frying pan in the box (the X2 adds one)
- Fire-Maple states no fuel use per litre, so we cannot score fuel use
- SectionHiker's 2020 review found a much slower boil, but it covers an older X1 with a 1.5 L pot and a 5,115 BTU stove, so we do not count it
