Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 8/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 8: Clearly better than most.

Fenix gives 700 lumens on Turbo, tested to ANSI/PLATO FL1, but its runtime chart shows Turbo starting at 700 lumens and stepping down in a zigzag, so we band what 1lumen measured: 678 lumens at 30 seconds, about 650 lumens at 1 minute (read from its graph) and above 500 lumens for about 3 minutes, then just under 200 lumens by 7 minutes 30 seconds (268 lumens at 10 minutes). More than 500 lumens held for over a minute, so the 500-799 band. Cheule's measured 743 lumens at turn-on. Both tests used the earlier ARB-L16-700P battery; Fenix's pages now list the ARB-L16-800P.

Runtime

From maker's figures 3/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Fenix's table gives 12 h 15 min on Medium (130 lumens) and 4 h on High (400 lumens), but these are FL1 times to 10% of output, and the runtime chart on the same page shows Medium easing to about 50 lumens within the first hour or so and ending at about 9 h, and High settling at about 150 lumens until about 2 h 55 min, then dropping to under 20 lumens. Where Fenix's own pages disagree we band the lower-scoring reading: the 2.9 h in the spec is our reading of Fenix's chart (High at about 150 lumens, over 80 lumens), not a Fenix figure, and it falls in the 2-3.9 h band. Banded on the table's 12 h 15 min alone it would be 5, but the chart shows Medium above 80 lumens for only the first hour. 1lumen's tests match the chart: Medium about 127 lumens for 27 minutes then 41 lumens from 1 h 9 min, High about 117 lumens until 2 h 58 min. Turbo is 1 h 10 min; Low (30 lumens, 58 h) is under 80 lumens, so it doesn't count.

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 7: Better than most.

Fenix's own figures run from 78 g (its US specification text and Fenixlight UK) to 79.7 g (its US parameters image; 80 g in its spec chart), all with battery and headband; 1lumen weighed 78.1 g. We show 80 g (79.7 g rounded). Every figure is in the 50-89 g band.

In short

Good for

  • Night walks, running and camp tasks where you want an 80 g torch with a 138 m spot beam
  • Evenings and short winter days when you won't need more than about 3 hours of bright light
  • Using as a pocket torch too: the lamp slides off the band

Strengths

  • 79.7 g with battery and headband
  • 700 lumens (FL1) with a 138 m beam by Fenix's spec chart (its US text still says 115 m)
  • IP68: waterproof underwater to 2 m, with 2 m impact resistance
  • Red light and red flash kept apart from the white modes; electronic lock-out
  • USB-C charging, with a battery-level light in the button
  • 1lumen's readings matched Fenix's at Low, Medium and High (129, 399 lumens against 130, 400)

Weaknesses

  • Turbo falls from 700 lumens to under 200 lumens within about 8 minutes (1lumen)
  • Only about 2.9 hours at 80 lumens or more: Medium eases to about 50 lumens after the first hour or so
  • A single spot beam with no flood (CleverHiker)
  • Small 16340 battery (the ARB-L16-700P in the reviews; Fenix now lists the ARB-L16-800P)
  • The body gets hot on higher modes (CleverHiker)
