Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: thin liner glove 1/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 1: A real weak point.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
78 g for the pair in size L, Extremities' figure on its Terra Nova webshop page: the 60-109 g band. The Great Outdoors weighed 69 g (size M) for the earlier Waterproof Power Liner (Terra Nova code 22WPGR, listed at 71 g), a different version and a tester's figure, so it isn't used.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Extremities' own X-Dry Stretch membrane, described as a 'PFC-free waterproof insert' with a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, but nowhere stated as sealed. The method's 4 band needs a sealed waterproof insert and doesn't band gloves by mm, so a stated HH figure doesn't change the band: a glove with its own membrane and no statement that the insert is sealed is the 2 band, the same call as the OEX Summit Waterproof Gloves. The page's feature list names X-Dry as a 'waterproof and breathable membrane' and has no seam statement. The line 'Seal Integrity Validation at key stress points and seams' comes from a site-wide 'Waterproof Guarantee' explainer on every Terra Nova, Wild Country and Extremities page (it names tents, jackets and gloves alike), not from a statement about this glove's insert, so it isn't used. It would be the 4 band if Extremities said the insert is sealed.
In short
Good for
- Cool, drizzly days when you want a waterproof glove that is light and thin
- A waterproof liner under an insulated glove or mitt (check the outer glove still fits over it)
- Using a phone with the gloves on
Strengths
- Waterproof stretch fleece glove at 78 g for the pair
- X-Dry Stretch insert with a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, by Extremities' figure
- Silicone grip print on the palm and touchscreen-compatible thumb and index finger
- Recycled polyester outer (92% of the shell)
Weaknesses
- No insulation stated, so it is a thin waterproof layer, not a winter glove on its own
- Extremities' membrane is its own and not stated as sealed, so waterproofing scores 4
- No independent review of this version found, so warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
- The Great Outdoors reviewed the earlier Waterproof Power Liner (no grip print) and found poor palm grip and a slow drying time; that review doesn't cover this version
