Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Brand lists 60 g for the L, in the under 70 g band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 10/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Brand gives a packed size of 13 cm long and 5 cm across for the L: 3.1416 x 2.5 x 2.5 x 13 = 255 cm³, about 0.26 L, in the under 0.6 L band.

In short

Good for

  • Ultralight backpackers who still want some neck support
  • Side sleepers who want a wider pillow under 70 g that stays under the head
  • Use on a smooth air mat: loops and the cord supplied let you tie it down

Strengths

  • 60 g and about 0.26 L: a little larger than a tennis ball
  • 46 x 30 x 12 cm: wider than the M, so the head stays on it when you turn (Pack & Trail)
  • Cut-away shape and baffles keep the head from sliding
  • Stretch polyester cover (embossed 20 D, 100% post-consumer recycled) that Exped calls soft against the skin
  • Fabric loops and a cord are supplied for fixing it to a mat
  • 5-year warranty from Exped

Weaknesses

  • No padded top: firmer and less cosy than hybrid pillows (Pack & Trail and Treeline, on the earlier version)
  • 12 cm tall: tall for back sleepers when fully inflated (Pack & Trail said the same of the 10 cm M)
  • The earlier version's underside fabric was slippery on a smooth mat (Treeline)
  • Needs care to avoid punctures (Live for the Outdoors, on the M)
  • Tests so far were of the earlier version, so comfort is an estimate, not a reviewed score
