Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Exped's minimum weight of 2.6 kg is in the 2.0-2.69 kg band (2.8 kg packed with everything). Two people sharing carry about 1.3 to 1.4 kg each.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Exped's current page gives the fly as 3,000 mm water column, in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the floor as 5,000 mm, so no point is taken off. A 2022 Outdoor Guide write-up lists a 1,500 mm fly, so check the tag on an older tent. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 7/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.
Exped's 2.8 m² canopy area for two people is 1.4 m² each, in the 1.35-1.59 m² band. It equals the inner's 215 x 130 cm outline, so the real sleeping area of the shaped inner may be a little less. Inner height is 110 cm, and the vestibule area is 3.7 m².
Packed size
From maker's figures 2/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 2: A weak point.
Exped's packed size is 55 x 20 cm: 3.1416 x 10 x 10 x 55 = 17,279 cm³, so 17.28 L, in the 15 L+ band.
In short
Good for
- Two people on canoe, bike-tour or campsite-to-campsite trips who want a big sheltered porch
- Wet-weather camping where you want to sit and cook under a 3.7 m² porch
- Shared carrying, at about 1.3 to 1.4 kg each
Strengths
- Large 3.7 m² porch
- Freestanding, so it can be moved after pitching
- Fly 3,000 mm and floor 5,000 mm
- Inner 215 x 130 cm and 110 cm high
Weaknesses
- Heavy and bulky for backpacking: 2.6 kg minimum and 55 x 20 cm (17.3 L) packed
- Older reviews say it needs plenty of anchor points in wind, but they are of earlier builds, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
