Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Waterproof build

From maker's figures 6/10

How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 6: A bit better than average.

Roll-top closure. Both Exped pages list the seams as taped in their spec tables, but Exped UK's description says completely seam-welded and exped.com's says fully heat-sealed, so the pages disagree; we band the lower-scoring taped. Exped UK says it is not submersible and neither page makes a submersion claim: the 3 band (taped seams and a roll-top).

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 6: A bit better than average.

120 g for 19 L is 6.3 g/L, in the 6.0–8.4 g/L band (Exped UK's and exped.com's spec tables). Needle Sports lists 110 g (5.8 g/L), which would be the 4 band; we band Exped's own figure.

In short

Good for

  • Squeezing a sleeping bag or clothes down to the smallest size: four lengthwise straps and a flat valve
  • Inflating an Exped mat: the valve works as a pump bag
  • Colour-coding kit: three sizes (13, 19 and 36 L), each its own colour
  • Not for river crossings or anything that may go under water

Strengths

  • Four lengthwise compression straps, a flat valve and a roll-top with a quick-release buckle
  • 120 g for 19 L (6.3 g/L)
  • Recycled 70D nylon with a PU coating and a 7,000 mm water column
  • White inside coating makes contents easy to see; grab handle at the base
  • 5-year warranty

Weaknesses

  • Exped says it is not submersible
  • Exped's pages disagree on seams (taped in the spec table, welded in the description), so we use taped
  • 20 g heavier than the Versa Compression in the same 19 L
  • No independent tests found, so durability and ease are estimates, not reviewed scores
