Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much they add to your pack. 7: Better than most.
Craghoppers lists 270 g without naming a size. Live for the Outdoors weighed 262 g in unisex S regular, so size M should be a little heavier than that. The 220–289 g band only changes if M reached 290 g, which is 20 g more than the brand's own figure, so 4 stands.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 9/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Craghoppers gives 20,000 mm for the fabric and says the seams are fully taped: top band. Live for the Outdoors (published January 2025) quoted 15,000 mm and 10,000 g/m2/24h breathability for the same Ascent II; Craghoppers' page shows 20,000 mm and 30,000 g/m2/24h now and in an Internet Archive copy from January 2026, so the brand's figures differ from that review's. We band the brand's current figure. At 15,000 mm the score would be 4.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
On and off*
Estimate: only 1 review about on and off (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How easily they go on and off over boots.
1 review on on and off, e.g. "slightly easier to get the trousers on over chunky hiking boots, but not as effectively as pairs with longer ¾-length or full-length zippers".
In short
Good for
- Emergency or occasional rain cover for summer and shoulder-season hill walks and Duke of Edinburgh trips
- Light packs: 270 g, and Live for the Outdoors measured the stuff sack at 17 x 11 cm
Strengths
- Light at 270 g (262 g weighed in unisex S) and packs into its own sack
- Elasticated waist with drawcord, ankle tabs and heel tape; 2 pockets
- Short, regular and long leg lengths in XS to XXL
Weaknesses
- Ankle zips reach only to the knee (about 50 cm, Live for the Outdoors), so they go on over boots less easily than 3/4 or full-length zips; Craghoppers calls them long-length
- Poor venting: no long zips, and the pockets are the only way to dump heat
- Cut is a little baggy and boxy, and the fabric has a shiny, plastic feel (Live for the Outdoors)
- Live for the Outdoors (January 2025) quoted lower figures (15,000 mm, 10,000 g/m2/24h) than Craghoppers now publishes (20,000 mm, 30,000 g/m2/24h), which the brand has since raised
- Only one independent test of this version, so fit and durability aren't scored yet
