Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Brightness
From maker's figures 5/10How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Maker's figure, 325 lumens on High with no test standard stated on Black Diamond's product pages: the 300–499 band (maker's figure). Its instruction sheet gives 2.5 hours at this level and iRunFar found that about right, so the output holds well beyond a minute.
Runtime
From maker's figures 5/10How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Black Diamond's instruction sheet (linked from its product page) gives 4.3 hours on Medium (180 lumens), the longest it gives for a mode of 80 lumens or more: the 4–5.9 h band. High (325 lumens) lasts 2.5 hours. The product pages show only 30 hours, which is the 6-lumen Low mode. iRunFar found the 2.5 and 4.3 hour figures about right.
Weight
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack and your head. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Black Diamond's product pages list 48 g (US and EU agree) for a lamp with a built-in battery, under the 50 g band. Its instruction sheet says 39 g, Ultralight Outdoor Gear 40 g and iRunFar 38 g, all in the same band.
In short
Good for
- Evening and early-morning runs, dog walks and a pocket back-up lamp where weight matters most
- A spare in the lid of the pack on three-season day walks
- Hikers who want USB-C charging and a lock so it cannot switch on in the pack
Strengths
- 48 g with the battery built in (Black Diamond's page figure; its instruction sheet says 39 g); testers found no bounce
- 325 lumens (maker's figure) and a lens that tilts between two beam angles
- USB-C charging and a three-LED battery gauge
- Digital lock and dimming on the one button, plus a 360-degree reflective headband
- 3-year Black Diamond warranty
Weaknesses
- Short burn time: 2.5 hours at 325 lumens and 4.3 hours at 180 lumens (Black Diamond's figures, which iRunFar found about right)
- No red light and no spot lens, so it is a weak camp or night-navigation lamp
- The battery is built in and cannot be swapped on the trail
- IPX4: it takes rain, not heavy wet use or immersion
- Small buttons that are hard to press in gloves, and a few buyers found it pressed on the forehead
