Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 5/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Maker's figure, 350 lumens with no test standard stated on Black Diamond's DFR page: the 300–499 band (maker's figure). The Cosmo's instruction sheet heads its table ANSI FL-1, but it covers the Cosmo, not the DFR.

Runtime

From maker's figures 8/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 8: Clearly better than most.

Black Diamond's DFR page gives no burn times. The instruction sheet of the Cosmo 350 (the same 350-lumen lamp, with the same two-battery system) gives 175 lumens as 9.4 hours on the BD 1500 pack that the DFR comes with and 6 hours on AAA: both in the 6–9.9 h band. The 350-lumen mode lasts 5 hours on the pack and 3.2 hours on AAA. Ultralight Outdoor Gear's DFR page shows the same 3.2 h and 120 h figures as the sheet's AAA column.

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 7: Better than most.

Black Diamond's page lists 70 g and Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 82 g with batteries: both in the 50–89 g band.

In short

Good for

  • Camp use, evening walks and overnighters where a simple lamp with a red light is wanted
  • Hikers who want a rechargeable pack in the box and AAA as a back-up
  • Camp use, evening walks and damp-weather overnighters (stormproof, IPX4)

Strengths

  • 350 lumens (maker's figure) with adjustable brightness, red light and strobe
  • BD 1500 Li-ion pack included (charges in the lamp over USB-C), and the lamp also runs on three AAA
  • 175 lumens lasts 9.4 hours on the BD 1500 pack (Cosmo 350 sheet)
  • Two-button control, mode memory, battery meter and digital lock
  • 3-year Black Diamond warranty

Weaknesses

  • New for 2026 with no independent review, so comfort and beam are estimates, not reviewed scores
  • Black Diamond's pages disagree on the water rating: IPX4 on the DFR page, IPX7 on the Cosmo 350 sheet and at a UK shop. We show the lower, IPX4
  • Black Diamond's DFR page says the pack is included in one place and sold separately in another; Ultralight Outdoor Gear, Alpinetrek and the product photo show it included
  • Short at full power: 5 hours at 350 lumens on the pack, 3.2 hours on AAA
  • The lamp's weight isn't clear: 70 g on Black Diamond's page, 82 g at a UK shop
