Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 5/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Maker's figure, 350 lumens with no test standard stated on Black Diamond's product pages: the 300–499 band (maker's figure). Its instruction sheet gives 3.2 hours at this level on three AAA and 5 hours on the BD 1500 pack.

Runtime

From maker's figures 7/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 7: Better than most.

Black Diamond's instruction sheet (linked from its product page) gives 6 hours on Medium (175 lumens) with three AAA and 9.4 hours with the BD 1500 pack (sold separately): both are the 6–9.9 h band, so it is in the 4 band either way. High (350 lumens) lasts 3.2 hours on AAA. The product pages show only 200 hours, which is the 6-lumen Low mode.

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack and your head. 7: Better than most.

Black Diamond's product pages (US and EU) list 88 g and its instruction sheet gives 75 g with three AAA (a 42 g lamp plus 33 g of batteries): both in the 50–89 g band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear gives 89 g 'without batteries' and Needle Sports 88 g including them, so the shops disagree on what 88 g covers, but the instruction sheet shows the bare lamp is 42 g, so 88 g can't be the bare lamp.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Ease of use*

Estimate: only 1 review about ease of use (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How easy the buttons, modes and lock are, with gloves too.

1 review on ease of use, e.g. "When you're wearing gloves they're not the easiest, which is a shame as it's likely that's when you'll need them most!".

In short

Good for

  • Urban adventures and overnighters in the woods (Black Diamond's description), with a red light mode
  • Hikers who want AAA as a backup and the BD 1500 USB-C pack as an option
  • Wet UK trips: IPX7 takes immersion to 1 m for 30 minutes

Strengths

  • 350 lumens (maker's figure) with adjustable brightness, red light and strobe
  • IPX7: tested to 1 m for 30 minutes
  • Dual fuel: three AAA, or the BD 1500 rechargeable battery (sold separately, charges in the lamp over USB-C)
  • Two-button control, mode memory, battery meter and digital lock
  • 3-year Black Diamond warranty

Weaknesses

  • The BD 1500 rechargeable battery is sold separately
  • USB-C charging in the lamp works with the BD 1500 only, not the AAA cells
  • Output tops out at 350 lumens
