Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Big Agnes lists a trail weight of 992 g (tent, fly and poles, no pegs), just under 1.0 kg; with pegs and bags it is 1.13 kg.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 3/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Fly 1,500 mm is the 1,500–1,999 band, band 3 (5 out of 10), then one band lower because the floor is only 1,500 mm, under 2,000 mm.

Wind

Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 6: A bit better than average.

CleverHiker finds the HyperBead UL2 suitable for moderate wind when the foot end and guylines are properly tensioned. The GearJunkie Bikepack test is a different version.

Space

From maker's figures 6/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.

Big Agnes's 2.6 m² floor (218 cm long, 132 cm wide at the head tapering to 107 cm) ÷ 2 people = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15–1.34 band; the foot end tapers and two wide mats are tight.

Packed size

From maker's figures 7/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 7: Better than most.

Packs to 46 cm long x 13 cm across: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 46 = 6,106 cm³, so 6.11 L, in the 4–6.9 L band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about pitching (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

2 reviews on pitching, e.g. "We found it was possible for one person to set up in just a few minutes.".

Condensation*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 4/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

2 reviews on condensation, e.g. "Unfortunately, the rainfly has no vent to let your humid exhalations escape.".

Durability*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 5/10

How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.

2 reviews on durability, e.g. "it is still a thin fabric that is susceptible to abrasion from gravel or sandy surfaces.".

In short

Good for

  • Solo walkers who want a roomy, light double-skin tent, or two light-packing friends who accept a close fit
  • Dry-to-showery summer and early autumn wild camps where weight matters most
  • Camping on soft ground where the foot end can be pegged

Strengths

  • Trail weight of 992 g, so two people sharing carry about 500 g each
  • Two doors with a vestibule each, so neither sleeper climbs over the other
  • Brow pole gives good headroom and sidewall space for the weight (99 cm peak)
  • Large ceiling pocket and side pockets, praised by both OutdoorGearLab and CleverHiker
  • Packs to 6.1 L (46 x 13 cm)
  • Fast-fly option: the fly pitches over the footprint (sold separately) without the inner, for 657 g

Weaknesses

  • Low waterproof ratings: fly and floor are both 1,500 mm, so a footprint is advisable on wet ground
  • Tight for two: 1.3 m² each and the floor tapers to 107 cm at the foot end
  • No vents in the fly, so condensation can build up in damp or still weather (OutdoorGearLab found the underside of the fly soaked after a three-day rain test; CleverHiker also notes the lack of fly vents)
  • Semi-freestanding: the foot end must be pegged, which is hard on rock
  • Thin 15D fabric needs care; both reviewers advise a footprint or careful pitch choice on abrasive ground
  • OutdoorGearLab found it flexed when hit broadside by strong wind and does not recommend it for regular wet weather
  • Only two reviews of the current HyperBead version were found, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
