Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

Estimate from maker's specs: fleece or softshell glove 3/10

How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Estimate from maker's specs

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much they add to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

58 g for the pair, Berghaus's figure on its UK page (0.058 kg; it doesn't say which size, and its other listing of this glove gives the same figure): under 60 g, the top band, and close to the edge. Ultralight Outdoor Gear weighs 61 g (S/M), 65 g (M/L) and 66 g (L/XL), and Walkhighlands lists 65 g (L): on those figures the pair would be in the 60-109 g band, band 4 (7 out of 10). We band Berghaus's own figure and say so here.

Waterproofing

From maker's figures 6/10

How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 6: A bit better than average.

Berghaus calls the fabric GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER, 'windproof, breathable and water resistant', and sells it as a windproof glove: the 'windproof lining with a water-repellent finish' band, which needs a windproof glove plus a stated water-resistance claim. It isn't a waterproof insert, so the GORE-TEX waterproof rule doesn't apply (WINDSTOPPER is a windproof membrane). The generic GORE-TEX panel on the same page talks about waterproof protection and sealed seams, but that is the technology blurb, not a claim for this glove; Berghaus's product copy and Walkhighlands ('not waterproof') say otherwise, so we band the lower figure. Compared with the Montane Windjammer Lite (2): Montane makes no water-resistance claim at all, so it scores a band lower; Berghaus does make one. Berghaus also lists breathability 30 RET (shown as a fact, never scored).

In short

Good for

  • Cool, breezy days on the hill and year-round walking where wind is the problem, not rain
  • A light outer glove to wear alone or over a thin liner in spring and autumn
  • Using a phone or GPS with the gloves on, and gripping walking poles

Strengths

  • 58 g for the pair on Berghaus's figure, light enough to keep in a pocket all year
  • GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER fabric is windproof and breathable (Berghaus lists 30 RET)
  • Reinforced palms and fingertips for grip on walking poles
  • Touchscreen-compatible fingertips
  • Berghaus covers it under its free Repairhaus repair service

Weaknesses

  • Water resistant only, not waterproof: Berghaus makes no waterproof claim for the glove
  • Not insulated: Walkhighlands says it isn't warm enough for full winter conditions
  • Ultralight Outdoor Gear weighs the M/L pair at 65 g, above Berghaus's 58 g
  • Only one independent review (2023), so our warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
  • GO Outdoors lists the same barcodes as S-M and L-XL only, with no M-L
