Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 9/10

How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Alpkit publishes EN 13537 ratings of comfort -6 °C and limit -13 °C, which is in the -5 °C or colder band. The maker's figure; Live for the Outdoors repeats it and calls it modest for a winter bag. Alpkit's own 'AK Sleep Limit' of -11 °C is not used.

Room inside

Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 8: Clearly better than most.

The one review we found calls the cut roomier than most mummy bags, a plus for side sleepers and restless sleepers, though it may leave some cold dead space. Only one source so far.

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

1,420 g for the Regular (stuff sack 115 g extra, so 1,535 g in the sack; Live for the Outdoors weighed 1,541 g with sack) sits in the 1,300-1,699 g band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 1/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 1: A real weak point.

Alpkit gives only the pack size, 37 x 24 cm, so it is worked as a cylinder: 3.1416 x 12 x 12 x 37 = 16,739 cm3, so 16.7 L, in the 13 L+ band. Live for the Outdoors gives the sack as 35 x 22 cm in its text and 35 x 25 cm in its table (13.3 to 17.2 L), still in the same band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Comfort to sleep in*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How comfy the shape, hood and fabric feel; not the temperature rating.

3 reviews on comfort to sleep in, e.g. "It’s warm, comfortable and durable, with good features including an adjustable hood, cosy footbox".

Zip*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How smoothly the zip runs without snagging.

3 reviews on zip, e.g. "The zip slides reasonably smoothly".

Reviewers disagree on this.

In short

Good for

  • Winter and shoulder-season camps down to about -6 °C comfort on a budget
  • Campers who want a roomy bag and who carry the bag in a rucksack with space to spare

Strengths

  • 900 g of 650+ fill power RDS-certified duck down with box-wall baffles, a draught collar and an adjustable hood
  • Roomy cut with a 75 cm internal width, so it suits side sleepers and people who feel boxed in
  • Two-way 3/4-length YKK zip, a zipped inside pocket, and a cotton storage bag and compression sack included
  • 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • Bulky: about 16.7 L packed by Alpkit's figure (13.3 to 17.2 L by Live for the Outdoors' measure, which still lists a small packed size as a pro)
  • Comfort -6 °C is milder than many winter bags (Live for the Outdoors found rivals at -9 to -12 °C), so it is mid-range for a four-season bag
  • Down is 650+ fill power and not water-repellent, so damp is a bigger risk than with treated down
  • Roomy cut can leave dead space and cold spots for people who prefer a snug fit; one reviewer also found some hardware basic
  • Only a pre-order from Alpkit at the time of our check, with despatch from 2 November; no other UK shop found
  • Short on independent evidence, so damp performance, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
