Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 2/10

How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 2: A weak point.

Alpkit's R-value of 1.7 is under R 2: summer only. Alpkit's R-value guide says its figures follow ASTM F3340-22, though the Numo page does not repeat it.

Thickness

From maker's figures 8/10

How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 8: Clearly better than most.

8.5 cm thick.

Quietness

Estimate: only 1 review about noise (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 8: Clearly better than most.

One reviewer says it didn't rustle or crinkle during the night.

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

350 g with stuff sack and repair kit is under 400 g, the top band (one reviewer weighed 375 g).

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

Alpkit gives a pack 25 cm long and 9 cm across: 3.1416 x 4.5 x 4.5 x 25 = 1,590 cm³, about 1.59 L, in the 1.5–2.4 L band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Comfort*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about comfort (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How comfy it is, including for side sleepers.

2 reviews on comfort, e.g. "for comfort and convenience it scores very highly indeed".

Stability*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about stability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How well you stay on it without rolling off or bouncing.

2 reviews on stability, e.g. "the oversized air chambers on either side of the mat help to keep the sleeper centralised".

Durability*

Estimate: only 1 review about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 4/10

How well it resists punctures, leaks and worn valves over seasons of use.

1 review on durability, e.g. "Had two of these, the first one lasted 10 nights in the wild across a couple of trips then started leaking from the seams.".

In short

Good for

  • Lightweight summer backpacking when nights stay above about 8 °C
  • Bikepackers and hikers who want a thick, cheap, very small mat
  • Adding a closed-cell foam mat underneath for cold nights, as reviewers advise

Strengths

  • Very light at 350 g and packs to about 1.6 L
  • About 8.5 cm of cushioning: reviewers slept well, including a side sleeper
  • Wider outer air tubes help keep you centred on the narrow mat
  • Made from 100% recycled 20D nylon, with a repair kit and a 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • Not warm: R 1.7 is summer only on its own, and reviewers add a foam mat below near freezing
  • Narrow at 46 cm, tapered, and 182 cm long, so taller or broader sleepers may feel cramped
  • You blow it up by mouth, and the valve position makes it fiddly to squeeze out the last air
  • One blog reviewer got a slow leak on a 10-night trek, and a flat air mat leaves you with no insulation
  • Only two independent reviews, both from 2020–2021, so comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
