Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much the pair adds to your hands and pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Alpkit gives 123 g per pole for the 120 cm size (113 g at 110 cm, 135 g at 130 cm), without baskets and tip covers. Doubled to 246 g for the pair: the under 300 g band. Even the 130 cm size (270 g a pair) is in that band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 10/10

Whether they fit inside or along a rucksack. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Alpkit's page says 35 cm in its text and 34.3 cm for the 130 cm size in its spec list: both are in the under 45 cm band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Sturdiness*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about sturdiness (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 5/10

How stiff and steady they stay under your weight.

2 reviews on sturdiness, e.g. "The poles felt very sturdy to use, especially when going down a steep hillside.".

Reviewers disagree on this.

Locks*

Estimate: only 2 reviews about locks (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 7/10

How well the locks hold without slipping or loosening.

2 reviews on locks, e.g. "There is a little bit of play in them compared with poles that use clamps".

In short

Good for

  • Ultralight backpackers and fastpackers who want poles under 250 g a pair
  • Walkers and runners who want poles that vanish into a pack or running vest at 35 cm
  • Occasional-use poles for steep climbs, descents and river crossings

Strengths

  • 246 g a pair at 120 cm (Alpkit)
  • Folds to 35 cm in four sections
  • Pull-cord assembly in seconds, with a Kevlar-reinforced cord (Alpkit)
  • 3K carbon shaft, carbide tip, removable basket and rubber tip cover
  • 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee

Weaknesses

  • Fixed length: you must pick the right size, and it cannot be adjusted for slopes
  • Carbon, so a hard knock can snap it where an aluminium pole would bend
  • Not suited to pitching a trekking-pole shelter, as the length cannot change
  • Lock, grip and durability scores are blank: no independent review found
