Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 10/10How much it adds to your pack. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Maker's total weight is 298 g (285 g bag plus 13 g stuff bag), under the 400 g line. Bike Perfect weighed 269 g and Off.Road 274 g.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 10/10How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Maker gives 20,000 mm hydrostatic head for the 3-layer fabric, one figure for the whole bag so it counts for the floor too, in the 15,000 mm+ band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 9/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Maker gives 20 x 12 cm: 3.1416 x 6 x 6 x 20 = 2,262 cm³, about 2.3 L, under the 2.5 L line.
In short
Good for
- Ultralight and fast-and-light trips, alpine bivouacs and bikepacking races
- Carrying as an everyday emergency shelter in the lid of a pack
- Winter or alpine sleeping systems: its bigger volume takes a thick bag and mat
Strengths
- Under 300 g and packs to about 2.3 L
- 20,000 mm hydrostatic head, the highest of the Alpkit bivvy bags, with 3-layer 10D fabric
- More roomy than the Hunka, with a big hood for kit; Alpkit says its 193 cm product developer fits in with a winter sleep system
- Two-way zip with a storm flap lets you place the breathing gap where you want it
- Water-resistant stuff bag included, PFC-free water repellent finish and a 3 year Alpine Bond guarantee
Weaknesses
- Fiddly zip: the two-way zip snags the storm flap, and it sits low for people over about 175 cm
- The zip is not waterproof, and you must always leave a gap of about 15 cm open to breathe, so rain can get in
- Light condensation can build up inside on wet or cold nights, and one tester's bag was damp after rain
- Thin 10D fabric needs a clear patch of ground, away from stones and thorns
