Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Maker's weight is 330 g in the Chilli and Lego colours (the Kelp colour is 30 g heavier, 360 g), under the 400 g line.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 7/10

How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 7: Better than most.

Maker gives 10,000 mm hydrostatic head for the 30D recycled 2.5-layer nylon, in the 10,000–14,999 mm band. It is one figure for the whole bag, so it counts for the floor too and nothing is taken off.

Packed size

From maker's figures 9/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Maker gives 13 cm across x 15 cm long: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 15 = 1,991 cm³, about 2.0 L, under the 2.5 L line.

In short

Good for

  • Fast and light summer trips under a tarp or in dry weather, with your head out in the open
  • Cheap first bivvy to keep a sleeping bag dry on wild camps, bikepacking and climbing trips
  • Emergency cover that packs to about the size of a small bottle

Strengths

  • Light at 330 g (360 g in Kelp) and packs to about 2 L
  • 10,000 mm hydrostatic head and fully taped seams
  • Integral mesh stuff pocket in the foot end, so there is no loose stuff sack to lose
  • Sculpted hood with two drawcords, and a 3 year Alpine Bond guarantee from Alpkit

Weaknesses

  • Head end cannot be fully closed and there is no zip, so heavy rain needs a tarp over the top
  • Snug for a bag plus a mat: a lofty sleeping bag and mat together leave little room (Alpkit makes a bigger Hunka XL for that)
  • Thin fabric, so it needs a clear patch of ground away from sharp stones and sticks
  • The two drawcords can tangle, and reviewers find them awkward to loosen from inside in the morning
  • Only one UK review at the current specification covers condensation, so condensation is an estimate, not a reviewed score
