Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much the pair adds to your hands and pack. 7: Better than most.
Alpkit gives 215 g per pole (its page says 'per pole'), doubled to 430 g for the pair: the 300-449 g band. The Great Outdoors weighed 225 g a pole (450 g a pair, the next band down); Alpkit's figure is the one scored.
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10Whether they fit inside or along a rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Alpkit says it shrinks to 67 cm: the 65-74.9 cm band. The Great Outdoors lists the minimum as 69 cm and gives 'length when collapsed' as its one con.
In short
Good for
- Tall walkers, who get a 150 cm maximum without an extender
- Trekking-pole tarps and tents that need a long pole
- Walkers who like an extended foam grip for steep ground (Extended option)
Strengths
- 430 g a pair (215 g a pole, Alpkit)
- 67-150 cm range, longer than most poles
- Carbon upper sections with an aluminium lower section for strength (Alpkit)
- Flick-lock levers that the Great Outdoors found tough and easy to tighten in the field
- Tungsten tips, trekking baskets and rubber tips included, with a 3-year Alpine Bond guarantee
Weaknesses
- Packs to 67 cm, so it will not fit a day pack and rides outside
- Thin wrist strap: several Alpkit customers find it thin or rough, and one reports it snapping on the first walk
- The Great Outdoors weighed 225 g a pole against Alpkit's 215 g
- Length markings start at 120 cm and the top section has none, according to customers
- Lock, grip and durability scores are blank: only two usable sources each
