Where are you sleeping?

Summer wild camp

May to September, nights above about 8 °C, sheltered pitches.

Three-season hills

Hills in spring and autumn. Wind, rain, and nights near freezing.

Winter camp

Winter or high ground. Below freezing, strong wind, possibly snow.

What a score means

Scores compare gear across the whole market, not within a price. There's no single overall score: a bag that's perfect for July can be wrong for a winter ridge, so every product gets a score for each trip.

Research-based, plus our own tests

We read and watch other people's tests and reviews, check the maker's figures, and boil it down. Every product page lists its sources. Gear we've used ourselves on UK trips carries a "Tested by us" tag, and that test counts as one source.
